Which car owner has the most Indianapolis 500 wins?

The story behind the answer

Roger Penske is the car owner with the most Indianapolis 500 wins.

Penske’s teams have won the race 20 times, giving him the record for most owner victories. His first Indianapolis 500 victory came in 1972, when Mark Donohue won for Team Penske. The organization’s later champions included drivers such as Al Unser, Rick Mears, Emerson Fittipaldi, Hélio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya, Josef Newgarden, and Simon Pagenaud.

The record refers to victories by Penske-owned entries, not wins by Penske as a driver. Penske raced briefly before retiring from driving in 1965 and concentrating on team ownership and business. He later acquired the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar, making the statistic especially notable because he owns the event’s venue and sanctioning organization as well as its most successful team.

Lou Moore held the earlier owner record with five wins from 1938 through 1949. Chip Ganassi is among the closest modern challengers.
