Which car introduced the first production version of a unitary body with a separate subframe in 1922?

The story behind the answer

The Lancia Lambda, introduced in 1922, pioneered production use of a unitary-style body structure with a separate subframe.

Designed under Vincenzo Lancia, the Lambda used a stressed steel body shell incorporating a central structural tunnel. Its independent front suspension and compact V4 engine were also unusually advanced for the period. The design reduced weight while improving rigidity and road holding compared with conventional body-on-frame cars.

The Lambda is sometimes confused with the Citroën Traction Avant, which later became famous for combining front-wheel drive with a unitary body in mass production. The Lancia came earlier, although its structure and manufacturing approach were not identical to the fully integrated monocoque designs that followed.

Lancia produced the Lambda through several series until 1931. Its engineering influenced later European car design and helped establish the company’s reputation for technically ambitious automobiles.
