Andy Warhol painted a BMW M1 for the BMW Art Car project in 1979.
Warhol transformed a white BMW M1 racing car with brightly colored bands and abstracted forms, working directly on the vehicle rather than preparing a design for someone else to execute. He completed the car in a short period, and the result became the fourth BMW Art Car.
The M1 was a mid-engined sports car developed for racing and produced in limited numbers from 1978 to 1981. Warhol’s version was entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979, where it finished sixth in its class and ninth overall.
The project is sometimes confused with other artist-designed BMWs, including cars by Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, and David Hockney. Warhol’s contribution is specifically the BMW M1, chassis number ของ? The art car is commonly identified as car number 76.
