Volkswagen introduced the hot hatch with the 1976 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The first Golf GTI transformed a practical front-wheel-drive hatchback into a small performance car. Volkswagen fitted the Golf with a fuel-injected version of the EA827 engine, sportier suspension, sharper styling and a more purposeful interior. The result delivered enthusiastic handling and performance without sacrificing the Golf’s everyday usability.
The GTI was presented to Volkswagen management in early 1975, approved on May 28 that year and displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1975. It reached showrooms in September 1976. Its combination of a compact hatchback body, lively engine and relatively modest weight made it the archetypal hot hatch for many enthusiasts.
Volkswagen did not invent every ingredient of the idea: the 1967 Simca 1100 Ti and 1971 Autobianchi A112 Abarth were earlier sporty small hatchbacks. However, the Golf GTI popularized the formula internationally and influenced decades of rivals from Peugeot, Renault, Ford and other manufacturers. The GTI name remains associated with Volkswagen’s performance-oriented Golf models.
