Which car became the first production vehicle with a turbocharged gasoline engine, in 1962?
Answer
Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire
Answer
Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire
The Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire became the first production vehicle with a turbocharged gasoline engine in 1962.
Oldsmobile fitted a turbocharger to its compact aluminum 215-cubic-inch V8 and sold the result as the Jetfire. Because the engine could suffer detonation under boost, the system used a fluid called Turbo-Rocket Fluid, which helped control combustion conditions. The arrangement was technically ambitious but required careful maintenance.
The Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder also appeared in 1962 with a turbocharged engine, so some lists describe the two cars as the first production turbocharged gasoline automobiles of that year. The Jetfire is generally identified as the first, with the Corvair following very closely. Later turbo cars such as the BMW 2002 Turbo and Porsche 911 Turbo helped make turbocharging more familiar to global buyers.
