Which capital city is the seat of the Indian Parliament?

The story behind the answer

New Delhi is the capital city and the seat of the Parliament of India. Parliament meets in the Central Vista area, where the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha conduct the country’s national legislative business.

The older Parliament House was designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and opened in 1927 during British rule. After independence, it became the seat of India’s Parliament when the Constitution took effect on 26 January 1950. A new Parliament building next door was inaugurated in 2023 and began hosting proceedings later that year.

People sometimes use “Delhi” and “New Delhi” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same administrative area. Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the larger territory. New Delhi is a distinct district and planned central area within it, containing major government buildings, ministries, diplomatic missions, and Parliament.
