Which capital city is the largest city in Saudi Arabia?

The story behind the answer

The capital city that is the largest city in Saudi Arabia is Riyadh.

Riyadh stands on the eastern side of Wadi Hanifa in the Najd region, near the geographic center of the kingdom. Its name is generally connected with the Arabic word for “gardens,” reflecting the oasis settlements and fertile areas that once existed around the city. These settlements eventually grew together into the urban center known as Riyadh.

The city became the capital of the Second Saudi State in the 19th century and was later central to the rise of modern Saudi Arabia. Abdulaziz Ibn Saud captured Riyadh in 1902, beginning the reconsolidation of his family’s power. When the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was established in 1932, Riyadh was made its national capital.

Riyadh is both the political and administrative center of the country, hosting the royal court, ministries, diplomatic missions, and major companies. Jeddah is another major Saudi city and an important port on the Red Sea, but it is not the national capital. Mecca and Medina are especially important religious cities, while Dammam is a major center in the Eastern Province.
