Which capital city is situated on the island of Luzon?

The story behind the answer

The capital city situated on the island of Luzon is Manila, the national capital of the Philippines.

Manila occupies the eastern shore of Manila Bay on Luzon, the country’s largest and most populous island. Its position beside a sheltered harbor helped it grow into a major trading center. The historic city developed around the Pasig River and the walled district of Intramuros, which became the center of Spanish colonial administration.

Spanish authorities established Manila as a city in 1571, and it served as the capital of the Spanish East Indies for more than three centuries. The city was also a crucial endpoint of the Manila galleon trade, linking Asia with Mexico and, through Mexico, the wider Spanish Empire.

A common mix-up is Quezon City: it is more populous and briefly served as the national capital, but Manila was reinstated as the capital in 1976. “Manila” can also refer informally to Metro Manila, a much larger capital region that includes Quezon City and other municipalities.
