Which capital city is mainly located on the island of Zealand?

The story behind the answer

Copenhagen is the capital city mainly located on the Danish island of Zealand.

Copenhagen occupies eastern Zealand, while parts of the city also extend onto the smaller island of Amager. Its position at the entrance to the Øresund places it opposite Malmö, Sweden, and has helped make the city a major Baltic trading and cultural centre. The city’s historic core, royal institutions and much of its urban population are on Zealand.

Zealand, called Sjælland in Danish, is Denmark’s largest and most populous island proper, covering about 7,031 square kilometres. Copenhagen is not the same as the administrative Region Zealand: the city lies primarily in the Capital Region, while Region Zealand is a separate administrative area covering much of the island’s southern and western parts.

A frequent mix-up comes from the English names Zealand and New Zealand. Danish Zealand is a European island, not part of the Pacific country. Another nearby geographic fact is that Copenhagen is linked to Sweden by the Øresund Bridge, reinforcing its role as a cross-border metropolitan hub.
