Which canal links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans?
Answer
Panama Canal
Answer
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Panama.
The canal crosses the Isthmus of Panama and uses a system of locks to raise ships to Gatun Lake, carry them across the continental divide, and lower them again toward the opposite coast. It opened to commercial traffic on 15 August 1914.
A French construction effort began in the late nineteenth century but failed after severe financial problems, engineering difficulties and disease. The United States then completed the project. The Panama Canal Zone was administered by the United States until control was transferred to Panama under treaties that took full effect in 1999.
The canal shortened maritime routes between the Atlantic and Pacific, avoiding the long voyage around Cape Horn. The Suez Canal also connects two seas, but it runs through Egypt and links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.
