Which Canadian officer signed the Japanese surrender document on the wrong line?
Answer
Lawrence Moore Cosgrave
Answer
Lawrence Moore Cosgrave
Colonel Lawrence Moore Cosgrave signed the Japanese surrender document on the wrong line.
Cosgrave represented Canada at the ceremony aboard USS Missouri on 2 September 1945. On the Japanese copy of the Instrument of Surrender, he signed below the line intended for Canada rather than above it. As a result, the signatures that followed appeared displaced from their printed country labels.
Lieutenant General Richard K. Sutherland corrected the mistake on the Allied copy by crossing out and rewriting the printed titles of the Allied nations. He initialed each alteration, and the Japanese representatives accepted the corrected document. The error did not invalidate the surrender.
Cosgrave had been blinded in one eye by a World War I injury, a detail often cited in accounts of the signing mistake. The incident is a small but memorable detail from a ceremony otherwise planned with extreme precision.
