The Canadian coffee and doughnut chain founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario, is Tim Hortons.
Canadian hockey player Tim Horton and Jim Charade founded the business in 1964. The first doughnut shop opened on May 17 of that year at 65 Ottawa Street North in Hamilton, after an earlier hamburger-restaurant venture. The original name was Tim Horton Donuts.
Ron Joyce became involved soon afterward, taking over one location in 1965 and becoming Horton’s business partner by 1967. After Horton died in a car crash in 1974, Joyce bought the Horton family’s shares and rapidly expanded the chain through franchising.
The company later merged with Wendy’s in 1995 and became part of Restaurant Brands International after Burger King’s merger with Tim Hortons in 2014. Another common detail people get wrong is the punctuation: the brand was once written “Tim Horton’s,” but the official name is now Tim Hortons without an apostrophe.
