Which Canadian-born author won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976?
Answer
Saul Bellow
Answer
Saul Bellow
Saul Bellow, a Canadian-born author, won the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy honored his human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture.
Bellow was born Solomon Bellows in Lachine, Quebec, in 1915, and his family moved to Chicago when he was a child. He became a major American novelist while retaining both Canadian and American citizenship. His breakthrough came with The Adventures of Augie March in 1953, followed by acclaimed novels including Herzog and Humboldt's Gift.
The Nobel was part of an extraordinary year: Bellow also won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1976. He remains the only writer to have won the National Book Award for Fiction three times. Readers sometimes confuse him with Canadian authors such as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, or Michael Ondaatje, but Bellow was the laureate selected for the 1976 Literature Prize.
