Which California course is the longtime home of the Genesis Invitational?

The story behind the answer

The Genesis Invitational is traditionally played at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. The venue is one of the defining landmarks of the PGA Tour’s early-season West Coast Swing.

The tournament began in 1926 as the Los Angeles Open and has carried several names, including the Nissan Open, Northern Trust Open, and Genesis Open. Riviera became its primary home in 1929 and has hosted the event on a near-continuous basis since 1973.

Riviera was designed by George C. Thomas Jr. and opened in 1927. Its narrow fairways, strategic bunkering, and distinctive kikuyu grass make it a demanding test, while the par-three sixth hole is famous for its bunker in the middle of the green.

The word “longtime” matters because the tournament has occasionally moved. In 2025, wildfire impacts forced a temporary relocation to Torrey Pines in San Diego, but Riviera remains the event’s established home. Los Angeles Country Club and Pebble Beach host other major golf events, not this tournament’s regular stop.
