Which California bridge, completed in 1932, spans Bixby Creek on the Big Sur coast?
Answer
Bixby Creek Bridge
Answer
Bixby Creek Bridge
Bixby Creek Bridge is the California bridge completed in 1932 that spans Bixby Creek on the Big Sur coast.
The reinforced-concrete arch bridge carries Highway 1 across a deep canyon near the Pacific Ocean. Its single main arch and tall, slender approach spans made it an engineering landmark when the highway opened through Big Sur.
Construction began in 1931 during the development of California State Route 1. The bridge stands about 79 metres above the creek and is widely photographed because of its dramatic coastal setting.
It is often called the “Bixby Bridge,” although Bixby Creek Bridge is the formal name. It should not be confused with nearby Rocky Creek Bridge, another Highway 1 crossing in Big Sur.
