Which Byzantine church in Athens is a compact cross-in-square building known for its brick patterning?

The story behind the answer

The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea in Athens is a compact Byzantine cross-in-square building known for its decorative brick patterning.

The church was probably built in the eleventh century, although its construction history includes more than one phase. It stands on a small site in the center of modern Athens and preserves a characteristic Middle Byzantine arrangement with a domed central space.

Its exterior uses alternating courses, recessed brickwork, and ceramic decoration to enliven the masonry. These details are typical of the ornamental brick architecture that developed in Byzantine Greece.

Kapnikarea is often identified simply as the Kapnikarea Church, but its dedication is to the Virgin Mary. It survived major changes to the surrounding city and is now closely associated with the pedestrianized Ermou Street.
