Which butterfly species is known as the common buckeye?

The story behind the answer

The butterfly known as the common buckeye is Junonia coenia.

Junonia coenia is a North American brush-footed butterfly recognized by large eyespots on its wings. The eyespots can distract or startle predators, and their arrangement is especially conspicuous when the butterfly opens its wings. Adults are brown, orange, and cream, with blue and purple details around some eyespots.

Common buckeye caterpillars feed on plants from several families, including snapdragons, plantains, and members of the acanthus family. Adults often visit flowers and may also bask on bare ground or low vegetation.

The species is widespread in much of the United States and parts of southern Canada and Mexico. It is sometimes confused with tropical buckeye relatives, but Junonia coenia is the standard North American species meant by the common name common buckeye.
