Which butterfly species is called the glasswing butterfly?

The story behind the answer

Greta oto is the butterfly species commonly called the glasswing butterfly.

Its transparent wings have broad regions with very few colored scales, allowing light to pass through. Dark borders and reddish or orange markings outline the wings, while the absence of dense scales creates the characteristic glass-like appearance. The species occurs in Central America and parts of South America.

Adult glasswings feed on nectar, but males also gather chemicals from certain plants. These compounds can be converted into pheromones used during courtship. Their caterpillars feed on plants in the nightshade family, including Cestrum species.

“Glasswing” is a common name that may also be used for other transparent-winged butterflies, especially members of the tribe Ithomiini. Greta oto is therefore the safest scientific identification when a question asks for the glasswing butterfly species. Transparent wings are not completely invisible; borders, veins, and reflections remain visible.
