Pieridae is the butterfly family that includes the cabbage white and the common brimstone.
Pieridae contains whites, yellows, and sulphurs, and its members are found on every continent except Antarctica. Familiar species include the small white, large white, cabbage white, clouded yellow, and common brimstone. Many pierids have predominantly white, yellow, or orange wings, often with dark tips or spots.
The cabbage white, Pieris rapae, is a widespread species whose caterpillars feed on brassica crops such as cabbage and broccoli. The common brimstone, Gonepteryx rhamni, is a yellow European and North African butterfly with distinctly pointed wings.
Pieridae is a biological family, while names such as “white” and “sulphur” are informal groupings. The family is also notable for its association with mustard-family plants, although different pierid species use different larval food plants. Their yellow or white appearance should not be confused with the unrelated whites in other common-name traditions.
