Harry and Esther Snyder founded In-N-Out Burger in Baldwin Park, California, in 1948. The company became known for a relatively focused menu, fresh preparation and a strong West Coast identity. Its burgers are commonly served with lettuce, tomato, spread, onions and a beef patty in a toasted bun.
The chain’s “secret menu” is widely discussed, although many of its unofficial combinations are simply ordering conventions. The best-known examples include Animal Style, which changes the burger’s toppings and preparation, and protein-style burgers served in lettuce rather than a bun.
