Fuddruckers began in San Antonio in 1979 with a concept centered on hamburgers served on freshly baked buns.
The restaurant was founded by Philip J. Romano, who originally called the business Freddie Fuddruckers. The concept emphasized preparing hamburger components in the restaurant, including baking the buns and offering a toppings bar. This approach gave customers more control over the final sandwich than a fixed, preassembled burger.
The name was later shortened to Fuddruckers. The chain expanded through franchising and became known for large burgers, customizable toppings, and buns baked in or near its restaurants. Its menu has changed over time, but the made-to-order identity remained central to the brand.
Fuddruckers is sometimes confused with Whataburger because both have Texas origins and prominent burger-focused identities. Whataburger began in Corpus Christi in 1950, while Fuddruckers began in San Antonio in 1979.
