Which building, now called Independence Hall, hosted the Second Continental Congress in 1776?

The story behind the answer

The building now called Independence Hall was the Pennsylvania State House in 1776.

Located in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania State House was completed in the eighteenth century as the seat of Pennsylvania’s colonial government. The Second Continental Congress used its Assembly Room when debating and adopting the Declaration of Independence.

The building was later renamed Independence Hall because of its connection with the Declaration and the United States Constitution. The same complex also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, making it significant to two foundational moments in United States history.

Carpenters’ Hall hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, which is why it is sometimes confused with Independence Hall. Federal Hall in New York City was the first United States Congress’s meeting place under the Constitution.
