Taipei 101 is illuminated during Taipei's New Year's Eve fireworks display.
Taipei 101 serves as the central visual landmark for Taiwan’s major New Year celebration. Fireworks are launched from the skyscraper and arranged around its outline, while additional lighting and musical performances contribute to the citywide event. The display is watched by crowds in Taipei and by viewers through international broadcasts.
The tower opened in 2004 and has 101 above-ground floors, which inspired its name. Its design combines modern engineering with elements associated with traditional Chinese architecture and symbolism. The building rises to 508 metres and was the world’s tallest building from its completion until the opening of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
The fireworks show has changed in length, scale, and creative theme over the years. Taipei 101 should not be confused with Taipei Arena, a nearby entertainment venue that may host concerts and countdown events but is not the skyscraper forming the fireworks display’s signature outline.
