Independence Hall hosted the Congress that approved the Declaration of Independence commemorated by America250. In 1776, the building was known as the Pennsylvania State House.
The Pennsylvania State House stood in Philadelphia and served as a meeting place for the Second Continental Congress. Delegates debated independence there, approved the Declaration, and later helped shape the Articles of Confederation. The Constitutional Convention also met in the building in 1787.
The structure was completed in 1753 and was designed by Edmund Woolley and Andrew Hamilton. Its tower once held the Liberty Bell, which was later moved to a separate pavilion nearby.
The name Independence Hall became common after the American Revolution, reflecting the building’s association with independence and constitutional government. It is now preserved as part of Independence National Historical Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
