Which building hosted the 1787 Constitutional Convention, an important milestone after American independence?

The story behind the answer

Independence Hall hosted the 1787 Constitutional Convention, an important milestone after American independence.

The building stands in Philadelphia and was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. Delegates met there to debate and sign the United States Constitution from May to September 1787. George Washington presided over the convention, which replaced the weaker Articles of Confederation with a new framework for the federal government.

The same building had already been central to the independence story. The Second Continental Congress met there, and the Declaration of Independence was adopted in the Pennsylvania State House in 1776. The building therefore links two foundational moments: declaring independence and designing the government that followed.

Its best-known name, Independence Hall, became common later because of its association with those events. The building is part of Independence National Historical Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is sometimes confused with Federal Hall in New York, where George Washington took the presidential oath in 1789.
