Which building hosted Japan’s formal surrender to Allied forces in Singapore on September 12, 1945?

The story behind the answer

Singapore Municipal Building hosted Japan’s formal surrender to Allied forces in Singapore on September 12, 1945.

The building, now known as City Hall, was the setting for the surrender of Japanese forces in Southeast Asia. Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander of the Southeast Asia Command, received the surrender from General Seishiro Itagaki, who acted for Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi, commander of the Japanese Southern Army Group.

The ceremony followed the Japanese surrender aboard USS Missouri on September 2. Regional surrender ceremonies were still necessary because Japanese forces across Asia and the Pacific had to receive instructions and formally hand over military authority to designated Allied commanders.

Singapore had been occupied by Japan since the fall of the island in February 1942. During the occupation it was renamed Shonan-to. The British return and the September ceremony marked the restoration of British military administration, although postwar political pressures soon contributed to Singapore’s longer decolonization process.
