Which building has held the record as the world's tallest since 2010?

The story behind the answer

Burj Khalifa has been the world's tallest building since its completion in 2010.

The skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, rises 828 metres to its architectural top. It opened officially on 4 January 2010 and was originally known during development as Burj Dubai. The building was renamed in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then president of the United Arab Emirates.

Chicago-based architect Adrian Smith designed the tower while working for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Its plan uses a buttressed-core structural system and a three-lobed footprint inspired in part by the shape of a desert flower.

Burj Khalifa contains residences, offices, hospitality spaces, restaurants, and observation decks. Shanghai Tower is the world's second-tallest completed building, while Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur became the second-tallest after its completion.
