Which building appears on the reverse of the 1976 Bicentennial half dollar?
Answer
Independence Hall
Answer
Independence Hall
Independence Hall appears on the reverse of the 1976 Bicentennial half dollar.
The United States Mint created special reverse designs for the quarter, half dollar, and dollar to commemorate the Bicentennial. The half dollar retained John F. Kennedy's portrait on the obverse and placed Independence Hall on the reverse.
Independence Hall in Philadelphia was a particularly fitting image because the Declaration of Independence was adopted there in 1776, when the building was known as the Pennsylvania State House. The Constitution was also debated and signed there in 1787.
The designs are easy to mix up. The quarter shows a Colonial drummer, while the dollar shows the Liberty Bell superimposed against the Moon. All three denominations carry the double date 1776–1976.
