Roridula shrubs catch insects with resinous, sticky tentacles, but the plants do not break down prey proteins by themselves in the usual way. Pameridea bugs move across the sticky leaves, feed on the trapped insects, and later deposit feces on the foliage. Roridula absorbs nutrients from these droppings, especially nitrogen compounds derived from the prey.
This is an example of indirect carnivory: the plant benefits from an animal that processes the prey rather than digesting it directly. Pameridea can walk on Roridula because its body has a thick, greasy surface that limits contact between the bug’s cuticle and the plant’s adhesive resin.
Two notable Pameridea species are involved. Pameridea roridulae is associated with Roridula gorgonias, while Pameridea marlothi occurs on Roridula dentata. Nitrogen-tracing experiments have helped demonstrate that nutrients from insects eaten by the bugs can ultimately enter the plant.
