Which browser first implemented JavaScript?

Netscape Navigator 2.0 was the first browser to implement JavaScript. Netscape added the language in 1995 to make web pages interactive instead of purely static documents.

Brendan Eich created the first JavaScript engine at Netscape in an intense development sprint. The language was initially called Mocha, then LiveScript, before being renamed JavaScript for its official release. Navigator 2.0 shipped JavaScript support alongside features such as plug-ins and animated GIFs.

The name JavaScript is a common source of confusion: JavaScript is not a version of Java, although the naming reflected Java's popularity at the time. Microsoft added its own compatible implementation, called JScript, to Internet Explorer in 1996. Netscape later submitted JavaScript to Ecma International, leading to the standardized language specification known as ECMAScript.
