Which brother shared Frankish rule with Charlemagne until 771?
Answer
Carloman I
Answer
Carloman I
Carloman I shared Frankish rule with his brother Charlemagne until 771. The two brothers inherited the Frankish kingdom together after their father, Pepin the Short, died in 768.
Carloman ruled the eastern and central portions of the kingdom, with Soissons as his capital, while Charlemagne controlled a different group of territories. Their division followed the Frankish practice of partitioning royal lands among heirs, but it created an uneasy political arrangement between the brothers.
The brothers briefly cooperated against a revolt in Aquitaine, although their relationship became strained. Carloman’s death on 4 December 771 ended the dual monarchy. Charlemagne then took control of Carloman’s territories, bringing the Frankish kingdom under a single ruler.
Carloman should not be confused with Charlemagne’s later descendants who also carried the name. He was the younger surviving son of Pepin the Short and the direct brother of Charlemagne. His short reign lasted from 768 to 771, making him an important figure in the transition from Pepin’s kingdom to Charlemagne’s larger empire.
