Which Broadway musical won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama?
Answer
Hamilton
Answer
Hamilton
Hamilton won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The musical, with a score by Lin-Manuel Miranda, dramatizes the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and is based partly on Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography.
It premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in February 2015 before transferring to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, where it opened in August 2015. Its cast recording and innovative blend of hip-hop, R&B, pop, soul, and traditional musical-theater styles helped make it a major cultural phenomenon.
The Pulitzer was announced in April 2016. Hamilton was only the ninth musical to win the Drama prize, following winners such as South Pacific, Fiorello!, A Chorus Line, Sunday in the Park with George, and Rent. It also won 11 Tony Awards in 2016, including Best Musical.
The prize is specifically the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, not the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Miranda wrote the book, music, and lyrics, while Thomas Kail directed the original production.
