Kinky Boots won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical and features the song “The History of Wrong Guys.”
The musical is based on the 2005 British film Kinky Boots, which was inspired by the true story of a Northampton shoe factory that began making footwear for drag performers. Harvey Fierstein wrote the book, while Cyndi Lauper wrote the music and lyrics.
The Broadway production opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in April 2013. Its story follows Charlie Price, who takes over his family’s struggling shoe business, and Lola, a drag performer who helps develop a specialized line of high-heeled boots.
Kinky Boots won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Actor for Billy Porter. “The History of Wrong Guys” is sung by Lauren, Charlie’s fiancée, as she reflects on her romantic choices.
