Which Broadway musical won a record 12 Tony Awards in 2001?
Answer
The Producers
Answer
The Producers
The Broadway musical The Producers won a record 12 Tony Awards in 2001.
The musical was adapted from Mel Brooks’s 1967 film of the same name. Brooks wrote the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book with Thomas Meehan. The Broadway production opened at the St. James Theatre in April 2001, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman.
Nathan Lane played producer Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick played accountant Leo Bloom in the original cast. The production won Best Musical, as well as awards for its direction, choreography, book, score, orchestrations, scenic design, costume design, lighting, and leading performances.
Its 12 Tony wins set a record for the most awards received by a single production. The record is often confused with later shows that received more nominations or with productions that won many awards without matching The Producers’ total.
