Which Broadway musical was the first Disney stage musical produced on Broadway?
Answer
Beauty and the Beast
Answer
Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney stage musical produced on Broadway.
The musical opened at the Palace Theatre in April 1994, several years after Disney’s animated film became a major international success. It transferred the film’s story and songs to the stage while adding new material, including songs by Alan Menken and Tim Rice.
Susan Egan originated the role of Belle on Broadway, and Terrence Mann originated the role of the Beast. The production was directed by Robert Jess Roth, with choreography by Matt West and scenic design by Stanley A. Meyer.
Beauty and the Beast began Disney’s long-running Broadway theatre venture. Later Disney productions included The Lion King, which opened in 1997, and Aladdin, which opened in 2014. Those later shows are often remembered more for their theatrical staging, but Beauty and the Beast came first.
