Which Broadway musical is based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera?

The story behind the answer

The Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera is based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel of the same name.

Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the musical, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. The book was written by Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe. The plot follows Christine Daaé, a young soprano at the Paris Opera House, and her relationship with the mysterious masked Phantom who secretly trains and obsesses over her.

The musical opened in London’s West End in 1986 and reached Broadway in 1988. Its Broadway production opened at the Majestic Theatre, where it became one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. The stage adaptation uses Leroux’s Gothic premise but reshapes characters, relationships, and events for musical theatre.

The title is sometimes confused with the 1943 and 1962 film adaptations, which are separate screen versions. The musical’s score includes “The Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” and “Masquerade.”
