The Broadway musical that introduced “My Funny Valentine” was Babes in Arms.

The 1937 musical featured music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. In the show, the character Billie Smith sings the tender number to Valentine “Val” LaMar, giving the song its original theatrical setting and title reference.

Babes in Arms opened at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre on April 14, 1937, and ran for 289 performances. The score also introduced several other standards, including “Where or When,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Johnny One-Note,” and “I Wish I Were in Love Again.”
