Which British warship was Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar?

The story behind the answer

HMS Victory was Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The 100-gun first-rate ship of the line carried Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s flag during the decisive naval battle on 21 October 1805. Victory led the weather column of the British fleet toward the combined French and Spanish line, while Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood led the other column aboard HMS Royal Sovereign.

Victory broke through the enemy line near the French flagship Bucentaure and engaged the French ship Redoutable. During the close fighting, a French marksman fatally wounded Nelson on Victory’s quarterdeck. The ship survived the battle and carried Nelson’s preserved body back to Britain for his state funeral.

A common mix-up is Royal Sovereign, which was also a Trafalgar flagship—but it carried Collingwood, not Nelson. HMS Temeraire became famous for coming to Victory’s aid, while Bellerophon fought elsewhere in the British line. Victory remains preserved at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
