Which British ship carried Nelson's body after the Battle of Trafalgar?
Answer
HMS Victory
Answer
HMS Victory
HMS Victory carried Nelson's body after the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson was mortally wounded aboard Victory on 21 October 1805 while commanding the British fleet against the combined French and Spanish fleets.
The badly damaged Victory was initially unable to sail safely and was taken in tow to Gibraltar for repairs. Nelson's body was preserved in a large cask of brandy mixed with camphor and myrrh, secured aboard the ship under guard. The popular story that his sailors drank the preserving liquor is a later myth.
Victory finally reached Portsmouth on 4 December, after which Nelson's body was transferred for a state funeral. He lay in state at Greenwich before being buried in St Paul's Cathedral on 9 January 1806.
The other options were also famous Trafalgar ships, which makes them plausible mix-ups: Royal Sovereign was Admiral Collingwood's flagship, while Temeraire and Belleisle fought prominently in the battle.
