Which British Romantic painter is known for his series of paintings of Salisbury Cathedral?

The story behind the answer

John Constable is the British Romantic painter known for his recurring series of views of Salisbury Cathedral.

Constable’s connection with Salisbury grew through his friendship with John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury, and the bishop’s nephew, Archdeacon John Fisher. During visits to the area, Constable made drawings and oil sketches from several viewpoints, including the south-east, south-west, and east end. He later developed these studies into larger exhibition pictures.

His Salisbury Cathedral paintings are not copies of one identical scene. Changes in viewpoint, weather, sky, and mood allowed Constable to explore the relationship between architecture and the English landscape. Works such as Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds and Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows show that approach.

Constable is often contrasted with J.M.W. Turner. Both were major British landscape painters and sometimes rivals at the Royal Academy, but Constable generally emphasized observed countryside, changing skies, and local places, while Turner pushed light and atmosphere toward greater abstraction.
