Which British rider won the 1976 500cc World Championship?

The story behind the answer

Barry Sheene won the 1976 500cc World Championship. Riding a Suzuki RG500 for the Heron-Suzuki team, the British rider dominated the premier class and secured his first world title.

The RG500 was a significant machine because Suzuki made customer versions available to private teams, helping the two-stroke motorcycle become highly competitive. Sheene’s speed and consistency made him the standout rider of the season, and he finished ahead of teammate Teuvo Länsivuori in the championship standings.

Sheene defended the 500cc title in 1977, becoming a two-time premier-class world champion. The 500cc championship was the predecessor of today’s MotoGP class; the name MotoGP was introduced in 2002 when four-stroke machinery returned to the top category.

A common mix-up is confusing Sheene with Phil Read, John Surtees or Mike Hailwood. All were British world-class riders, but Read’s 500cc titles came in 1973 and 1974, while Surtees and Hailwood won their premier-class championships earlier.
