Which British retailer was founded in Brighton in 1976 by Anita Roddick?
Answer
The Body Shop
Answer
The Body Shop
The Body Shop was founded in Brighton in 1976 by Anita Roddick.
Roddick opened the first shop on Brighton’s Kensington Church Street while her husband, Gordon Roddick, was travelling. The business sold personal-care products in refillable containers and promoted ideas such as opposition to animal testing and support for community trade.
The company grew from a single Brighton shop into an international cosmetics retailer. Its early identity differed from conventional beauty retail because it connected product marketing with ethical and environmental campaigns.
The Body Shop is sometimes confused with Lush, another British cosmetics retailer. Lush was founded later, in 1995, by former members of the Cosmetics To Go team, while The Body Shop dates to 1976.
