Which British novelist wrote 'Treasure Island'?
Answer
Robert Louis Stevenson
Answer
Robert Louis Stevenson
The British novelist who wrote Treasure Island was Robert Louis Stevenson.
Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and Treasure Island became his best-known adventure novel. The story follows Jim Hawkins, who becomes involved with a treasure map, a voyage aboard the Hispaniola, and a mutiny led by the charismatic pirate Long John Silver.
The novel was first serialized in Young Folks magazine from 1881 to 1882 under the title Treasure Island, or the Mutiny of the Hispaniola. Stevenson later revised it for book publication, and Cassell & Company issued the first book edition on 14 November 1883. The story was inspired in part by a map Stevenson made to entertain his stepson, Lloyd Osbourne, during a stay in Braemar, Scotland.
Treasure Island helped shape modern popular images of pirates, including treasure maps marked with an X, isolated islands, buried gold, and one-legged seamen. Walter Scott, Jonathan Swift, and Daniel Defoe were also major British or Irish writers, but none wrote this novel.
