Which British monarch visited the United States during the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations?
Answer
Queen Elizabeth II
Answer
Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II visited the United States during the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, made a state visit from July 6 to July 11, 1976. President Gerald Ford received the queen during the visit, which formed part of the extensive international attention surrounding the United States’ 200th anniversary.
The royal couple visited several places, including Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York City, New Haven, Charlottesville, Providence, and Boston. In Philadelphia, Queen Elizabeth presented the Bicentennial Bell on behalf of the British people. The replica was cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the same London foundry associated with the Liberty Bell.
This was Queen Elizabeth II’s second state visit to the United States as monarch. The visit is sometimes mixed up with later royal visits by Charles, who was Prince of Wales at the time and did not become king until 2022. The 1976 visitor was therefore Elizabeth II, not the current British monarch.
