Which British heavy metal band had a hit with 'The Trooper'?

The story behind the answer

The British heavy metal band that had a hit with “The Trooper” was Iron Maiden.

Released on 20 June 1983, “The Trooper” was the second single from Iron Maiden's fourth studio album, Piece of Mind. Bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris wrote the song, which takes its subject from the 1854 Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War.

The track became one of Iron Maiden's signature songs. It reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and number 28 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Its galloping bass line, harmonized guitar melodies and Bruce Dickinson's commanding vocals helped make it a concert staple.

Listeners sometimes confuse the song's historical imagery with a general war anthem. It specifically draws on the doomed British cavalry charge described in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade.” The red-coated mascot Eddie on the single artwork also became one of the band's most recognizable images.
