Which British general won the Battle of Plassey in 1757?

The story behind the answer

Robert Clive was the British general who won the Battle of Plassey in 1757.

Fought on 23 June 1757 in Bengal, the battle pitted the forces of the British East India Company under Clive against the army of Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, with limited French support. Although the Nawab’s army greatly outnumbered Clive’s force, much of it stayed inactive after Clive reached an agreement with the commander Mir Jafar.

The Company victory established British influence over Bengal and marked a crucial step in the expansion of British power in India. Mir Jafar was installed as Nawab, while the East India Company gained increasing political and financial control over the region.

Plassey is often described as a turning point rather than simply a straightforward battlefield triumph. Diplomacy, bribery, defections and the Company’s military organisation were as important as fighting. Clive later became known as “Clive of India,” although his conduct and wealth remained controversial.
