Which British general surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777?

The story behind the answer

British general John Burgoyne surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga on October 17, 1777.

Burgoyne led a British campaign south from Canada, intending to control the Hudson River valley and separate New England from the other American colonies. His army became increasingly isolated as American forces blocked the advance and disrupted British supply lines.

The Saratoga campaign included major clashes at Freeman's Farm and Bemis Heights. American troops under General Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold helped force Burgoyne's army into a position where continued resistance was impractical. Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga, New York, after the British defeat.

The victory had international consequences. France viewed the American success as evidence that the rebellion could survive and soon entered an alliance with the United States. Burgoyne is sometimes confused with Charles Cornwallis, who surrendered a separate British army at Yorktown in 1781.
