Which British designer founded the fashion label Stella McCartney in 2001?

The story behind the answer

Stella McCartney founded her eponymous fashion label in 2001.

The label was established as a joint venture with the Kering group after McCartney had served as creative director at Chloé. Her first collection under her own name was presented in Paris in October 2001, establishing a style that combined sharp tailoring, feminine pieces, and a strong emphasis on avoiding leather and fur.

McCartney is the daughter of musician Paul McCartney and photographer and animal-rights advocate Linda McCartney, but her fashion career developed through formal training and work at established houses. She graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1995 and succeeded Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé in 1997. The label is sometimes confused with her earlier Chloé role, but Stella McCartney is the independent house she launched in 2001.
