Which British commander led the allied forces at Waterloo?
Answer
Duke of Wellington
Answer
Duke of Wellington
The Duke of Wellington led the allied forces at Waterloo. The British commander, Arthur Wellesley, commanded the multinational army that faced Napoleon’s French forces in Belgium on 18 June 1815.
Wellington’s army included British, Dutch, Belgian, German, and other allied troops. He selected defensive ground near the ridge at Mont-Saint-Jean and used fortified positions such as Hougoumont and La Haye Sainte to absorb repeated French attacks. Late in the day, the arrival of Prussian forces under Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher helped turn the battle decisively against Napoleon.
The Duke of Wellington was not the sole allied commander in the wider campaign: Blücher independently commanded the Prussian army and coordinated with Wellington. The other options refer to important British figures, but none led the allied army at Waterloo. Viscount Castlereagh was a diplomat, Sir John Moore died in 1809, and Lord Nelson died at Trafalgar in 1805.
