Which British children's author wrote 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'?
Answer
Beatrix Potter
Answer
Beatrix Potter
The British children's author who wrote The Tale of Peter Rabbit was Beatrix Potter.
Potter wrote and illustrated the story, which follows the mischievous young rabbit Peter as he disobeys his mother and enters Mr. McGregor's garden. The character was inspired partly by Potter's pet rabbit, Peter Piper, and the original story began as an illustrated letter written in 1893 for Noel Moore, the five-year-old son of Potter's former governess.
After several publishers rejected the work, Potter privately printed an edition in 1901. Frederick Warne & Co. published a trade edition in 1902, and the book quickly became a major success. Potter went on to create more than twenty illustrated “little books,” including The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck.
A useful distinction is that Potter was not only the author but also the illustrator. The book's enduring appeal comes from its compact storytelling, detailed animal drawings, and Peter's recognizably childlike mixture of curiosity, disobedience, and fear.
